Sales of efficient, whisper-quiet multi-split systems are posting double-digit gains and show no sign of slowing. By some estimates, as many as 1.5 million new units are going in each year. And there’s still lots of growth potential.
We’re excited about the trend, partly because mini-splits solve several HVAC challenges so well, and partly because it’s another revenue stream for the residential/light commercial HVAC folks.
You have significant influence on how popular these systems become. One study found that a quarter of those who chose a ductless heating/cooling system were influenced by a contractor/installer. That was second only to recommendations by friends, family or acquaintances – many of whom were probably influenced by a contractor/installer. (And aren’t those word-of-mouth referrals great!)
Ductless multi-split systems are less expensive (and easier) to install than ducted systems. They can provide efficient heat and cooling in millions of homes that cannot accommodate ductwork. They potentially deliver cleaner air since there’s no ductwork where dust and contaminants can settle.
Mini-splits are ideal for spot-cooling and heating, where the target zone is a room addition or a converted attic or garage. They are a quieter choice than noisy window and through-the-wall air conditioning systems, and they don’t require the large installation area that can lead to security concerns.
Additionally, maintenance of these system can provide much needed revenue as their efficiency is impacted similarly y lack of maintainable as a ducted system would be. Utilizing products such as our CoilJet or BBJ Mini Split First Aid Kit to keep coils and blower fans clean and mold free provides the benefit of additional service revenues.
Mini-splits have an edge in energy efficiency, offering a responsible solution to the increased consumer demand for air conditioning. Some SEER ratings go as high as 26. Higher initial costs can be recouped by energy savings, and federal tax credits can offset some of the up-front expense.
With a range of attractive features – nearly silent performance, programmable on-off cycles, advanced air filtering and auto-restarts after power outages – we think they’ll earn a loyal following.
Do you have experience with mini-splits? Do you recommend them to your customers? Any tips for installation and maintenance?
